Dog training is carried out by Svenska Service- och Signalhundsförbundet (Swedish Service- and Hearingdog Association). The operator owns a dog and pays for supplies, veterinarian bills, etc. The Swedish Service- and Hearingdog Association pays for the training. The training program trains the person with a disability so she/he can train her own dog to help in daily life activities. The dog is trained to pick things up from the floor, open and close doors, help to pull off clothing, and throw rubbish in the wastebasket.

It is important to think carefully before getting a dog. The dog’s characteristics and the handler’s need for assistance will govern the choice.

Choosing a dog is highly individual, depending on the person’s needs.

By training a dog, people expand their own horizons too. Dogs have a lot to teach people. And there is the added benefit of getting regular exercise when going out with the dog.
